Sip & Steep: Making Coffee at Home

First is the Pour Over method.

Just like the French Press, the Pour Over has a lot of history. The Pour Over was created in 1908 and was known as one of the best ways to make a flavorful cup of coffee. It eventually fell out of popularity but has had a resurgence recently. You can now order a Pour Over at almost every coffee shop.

Recipe for Pour Over Coffee:

Ingredients
  • 2 Tablespoons of ground coffee (20 grams)
  • 1 ½ cups of freshly boiled water (330 grams)
  • Pour Over cone
  • Pour Over filters
Here are some favorite containers:
  • Ceramic – Classic and simple (ex. the Hario v60)
  • Metal – Versatile and easy to clean
  • Glass – Well made and creates a clean cup of coffee (ex. Chemex)
Instructions
  1. Insert the filter into the Pour Over cone
  2. Add ground coffee
  3. Pour enough water over the coffee to wet the grounds
  4. Let the coffee absorb the water for about 30 seconds (this is called “Blooming”)
  5. After 30 seconds, pour the rest of the water over the grounds in steady controlled circles. Making the target brew time about 2 minutes.

Next up is Dalgona Coffee.

You may have heard of Dalgona coffee when it quickly went viral earlier this year. It’s surprisingly simple to make but requires a little bit of time to prepare. The simple mixture of sugar, water, and instant coffee creates a fluffy topping that’s perfect to mix into your milk of choice.

Recipe for Dalgona Coffee:

Ingredients
  • 2 Tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons of boiling water
  • 2 Tablespoons of instant coffee
  • Milk (your choice!)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or Mixer
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in the bowl
  2. Mix (by hand or with a mixer) until it forms a thick cream or stiff peaks
Optional alternatives to the recipe:
  • Dirty Chai - Top your Chai Latte with Dalgona Whip Coffee for an extra jolt of caffeine
  • Pumpkin Spice - add 1 Tablespoon of pumpkin puree to your milk and top with pumpkin spices for a Fall delight
  • Dark Chocolate - add dark chocolate syrup to your milk and top with chocolate shavings for a decadent treat
